I Love Italian Wine and Food - The Trentino-Alto Adige Region

Monday, March 31st, 2008

If you are looking for fine Italian wine and food, consider the Trentino-Alto Adige region of northern Italy. You may find a bargain, and I hope that you’ll have fun on this fact-filled wine education tour.

Trentino-Alto Adige is located in the center of Italy’s northern border. It touches both Switzerland and Austria. Among its tourist attractions are the Dolomite mountains, called “the most beautiful work of architecture even seen” by the famous architect Le Corbusier, glacier lakes, and Alpine forests. In fact the region is composed of two parts, Trentino in the south and Alto Adige in the north. Alto Adige belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire for centuries, where it was known as S?dtirol. Like many other parts of Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige was often invaded. Unlike most other parts of Italy, this area is officially bilingual; a sizable portion of its population about 925 thousand is German speaking.

Trentino-Alto Adige has plentiful forests, and the hillsides are covered with fruit trees. This is Italy’s major apple-producing region. Only about 15% of the land can be cultivated. Agricultural products include corn, wheat, oats, barley, and rye. In addition to beef and dairy cattle, mining and manufacturing are prevalent.

Trento is the administrative center of Trentino and Bolzano is the administrative center of Alto Adige. Both are tourist towns. Trentino was the site of the Council of Trent lasting almost twenty years in the middle of the 16th Century with a major impact on the Catholic Church. Both these cities, and many others in the region, have numerous churches and secular sites of interest to tourists.

Trentino-Alto Adige devotes about thirty thousand acres to grapevines, it ranks 16th among the 20 Italian regions. Its total annual wine production is about 25 million gallons, giving it a 14th place. About 55% of the wine production is red or ros?, leaving 45% for white. The region produces 8 DOC wines. DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which may be translated as Denomination of Controlled Origin, presumably a high-quality wine. A whopping 79.1% of Trentino-Alto Adige wine carries the DOC designation, by far the highest percentage in Italy. Trentino-Alto Adige is home to almost four dozen major and secondary grape varieties, about half white and half red.

Widely grown international white grape varieties include Gew?rtztraminer, Pinot Bianco, often called Pinot Blanc outside of Italy, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, often called Pinot Gris outside of Italy, Sylvaner, and M?ller-Thurgau. In fact, some say Gew?rtztraminer originated in the Alto-Adige town of Termeno, known as Tramin in German. Italian white varieties include Nosiola, and Moscato Giallo, Trentino-Alto Adige’s version of the international Moscato (Muscat) grape.

Widely grown international red grape varieties include Pinot Nero, called Pinot Noir outside of Italy, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The best known strictly Italian red varieties are Schiava, Lagrein, Teroldego, and Marzemino.

Before reviewing the Trentino-Alto Adige wine and cheese that we were lucky enough to purchase at a local wine store and a local Italian food store, here are a few suggestions of what to eat with indigenous wines when touring this beautiful region.

Start with Ravioli della Val Pusteria, Rye Pasta with Spinach and Caraway Seeds. Then try Gulasch de Manzo, Beef, Potato, Onion, and Paprika Stew.

For dessert indulge yourself with Krapfen Tirolesi, Fried Pastry with Marmalade and Powdered Sugar. Did you notice that these specialties seem as Austrian as Italian?

OUR WINE REVIEW POLICY While we have communicated with well over a thousand Italian wine producers and merchants to help prepare these articles, our policy is clear. All wines that we taste and review are purchased at the full retail price.

Wine Reviewed

Concilio Pinot Nero Reserva 2002 12.5% alcohol about $15

I’ll start by quoting the marketing materials: “Pretty aromas of strawberry, pepper and earth lead to flavors that are soft and velvety. Good varietal characteristics demonstrated here in ths light-to-medium bodied, long finishing wine. Match to a grilled salmon or tuna.

And now for my thoughts. This wine has a cherry and tobacco nose and is mildly acidic. It tastes of tobacco. The wine is round, mouth-filling and somewhat robust. It is a bit older than most of the wines in this series, and frankly, it shows. Like many Pinot Noirs, it tasted of earth.

Once in a while I follow the producer’s suggestions. I felt this Pinot Noir was an excellent accompaniment to a grilled Atlantic salmon with steamed asparagus. The fish brought out the wine’s fruit flavors, and the wine did a great job of cutting the fish’s fattiness. I still remember the first time that I drank a Pinot Noir (Oregon, I believe) with salmon at the suggestion of a excellent fish restaurant. It’s a great combination when both the fish and the wine are high quality. I ended this meal with almond milk chocolate, washed down with a bit of wine. This latter combination is not classical, but the result was more than satisfactory.

My next tasting included beef stew and potatoes, zucchini and onions in a tomato sauce, and a commercially prepared moderately spicy “Turkish” salad based on red pepper, tomato, and onion. The wine was round, mouth-filling, a bit complex. The dominant taste was tobacco. But I was disappointed, the wine was short.

Asiago is a cheese whose characteristics differ widely depending on where it is made, and its aging. I happen to love a local Asiago that my neighborhood supermarket carries once in a while. It is relatively sharp. I am told that Wisconsin Asiago cheese typically has butterscotch undertones. The imported Asiago tasted with this wine was nutty and pleasantly acidic, but frankly not as good as the local version. The cheese brought out the earthy characteristics of the Pinot Noir. Interestingly enough, the wine immediately changed its flavor and became more acidic in the presence of a commercially prepared roasted butternut squash dip.

In a close call, my initial reaction was not to purchase this wine again. Then I changed my mind, I would purchase it again, but be quite careful in pairing the wine. There is a simple solution, serve it with a grilled, preferably Atlantic, salmon.

Shih Tzu - The Hotly Contested Shih Tzu Size Part Ii

Monday, March 31st, 2008

In addition to the writings of Colonel Burkhardt regarding the practice of cross-breeding the Shih Tzu with Pekingese to reduce size, there is also published information of a booklet by Madam Lu expressing a similar opinion. These writings were done by someone connected with the newly formed Peking Kennel Club. The translator of the booklet was Mr. C.S.K. Chou, but there is no identification of the actual writer was. In reference to the Lhassa Lion Dogs the passage says: “There is also every evidence to show that these dogs have been bred down from a larger-sized breed and this theory is supported by the great variety of size and weight which is found in this class of dogs.”

We have been told that the empress Dowager did not approve of the use of “cruel practices” to stunt the growth of the dogs, the passages written by Colonel Burkhardt and this unknown writer seem to imply the imperial eunuchs tried to keep the Shih Tzu small by strictly selective breeding. This selective breeding was approved of by the Empress, according to a Mrs. Dixey. The breedings were not always successful so far as producing the uniform “smaller” size Shih Tzu, which most likely accounts for the smaller size Shih Tzu appearing in many different bloodlines of breedings between larger Shih Tzu, and not that the appearance of a smaller Shih Tzu in the litter is merely the “runt” of that litter. We all know that whatever is in the past of any dog’s bloodline can appear in the present. This goes for size the same as for health or any other genetic positive or negative influence on that litter.

The years immediately following the 1912 revolution, Colonel Burkhardt also tells us the mating was very haphazard. Some 20 years later there is still complaints in Madame Lu’s booklet regarding the “great variety of size and weight.” The same could have been said of the Empress Dowager’s Imperial Palace Goldfish which probably increased in size with the breakdown of controlled breeding. The Empress Dowager had many other pets besides the Shih Tzu.

There is strong support for the above viewpoint in the China Weekly Chronicle of June 10, 1934. The report was on Peiping’s First International Dog Show held on June 7, 1934. The paper states that the Lhassa Lion Dogs were, “on the whole, disappointing in spite of their numbers, showing too much deviation from the standard, especially in size, suggesting the necessity of careful breeding to the standard in the future.” Well, what exactly was that standard? The official Peking Kennel Club’s official standard did come until four years later. It is uncertain what standard is referred to at this earlier date, but is strong evidence that the question of size in the Shih Tzu has always, absolutely always been a very hot and controversial issue. I am not totally surprised about the myths and lies being spread in the years of 2004 onward about the production of smaller size Shih Tzu being a direct cause of someone being an irresponsible breeder and in-breeding or line-breeding close relatives just to achieve a smaller size Shih Tzu and obtain more money for that Shih Tzu along with the lies that these smaller type Shih Tzu are very “sickly, full of health problems, and only the runts of the litter.” This is not the reason we have smaller Shih Tzu among us.

All Shih Tzu breeders should have a strong grasp of Shih Tzu history to be able to communicate the facts surrounding the development of our present day Shih Tzu . (Please see Shih Tzu - The Hotley Contested Shih Tzu Size Part III).

Internet Dating Advice For A More Rewarding Experience

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Avoid costly mistakes that can put you in a worse position than when you started internet dating. This internet dating advice will show you these mistakes, and then you can save yourself from any early setbacks. Any one of these will ruin anything good that you have going or completely turn other singles off of you instantly.

First mistake singles usually make is lying on their profile. When you’re dating on the internet you have to be honest. Anyone can make a mistakes on the dating profile but a blatant lie is not something someone can forgive you for. There’s already a big thing with trusting people who use internet dating web sites so lying is not going to do you any favors. Honesty is an attractive trait in people.

Not sending any e-mails can affect your internet dating results. Many singles never send e-mails, and the main reason for this is you can’t send any until you have payed for your membership. You can reply to other singles e-mails but you need to initiate your own contact. It’s no good just setting up your profile just to receive contact from other singles. Other singles like to receive e-mails, this is what starts relationships. You can add that personal touch to an e-mail to show the other singles that you’re attracted to them by what you have read in their profile.

Having an empty profile is a sure way not to get contacted. By having an empty profile you’re giving the impression you’re only there to window shop. You need to have a nice detailed internet dating profile so other singles can see what makes you tick. They want to see what you enjoy about life, and what your goals are. They can get an idea of a future with you this way, and it puts a picture in their mind. Remember to keep all your information positive. Being negative is another big turnoff.

Not visiting the internet dating service will stop singles from contacting you. Most dating web sites will show the last time you have been online. If you only visit the service once a month everyone will see this, and it will show you’re not that serious in finding a date. Also the more active you are your profile will get higher in the search results as the internet dating service likes activity as well.

Contacting singles just because you like their photo will only get you disappointment. The most attractive singles on any internet dating service will always get the most messages. These will usually be flirts or smiles from singles on a free trial. These will very rarely get a reply so you’ll start assuming that no one wants to reply to your messages. Read someone’s profile first before making any contact, and then send them an e-mail. Just because you like the look of someone doesn’t mean you will have a lasting relationship with them. It probably wouldn’t get past the first date.

Never make any sexual requests or innuendos in any messages to another single. You might think that it’s funny but it will only turn the other single off. If you want to do this then there are adult internet dating services that are catered for this behaviour. On an ordinary dating service this will not be tolerated by the singles or the service itself. You don’t want to get banned from using the service because of 2 minutes of madness.

If you stay away from the mistakes above your internet dating experience will be a lot more rewarding. And you won’t be single for very much longer.

Dietary Approach

Monday, March 31st, 2008

The goal of achieving optimal fatty acid nutrition must be approached by altering the fatty acid composition of the day-to-day meal pattern. If the diet is high in saturated fats, more of the positions on the glycerol backbones will be taken up by saturated fats. If the diet is high in omega-6 fats or hydrogenated fats, more of the positions will be taken up by those fatty acids. If one can begin to increase the consumption of known health-enhancing fats, then the triglyceride and phospholipid pool will convert. This will in turn exert beneficial effects on membrane physiology and provide precursors for eicosanoids that exert health-enhancing rather than health-robbing effects.

OMEGA- 6 RECOMMENDATIONS

Various recommendations by research organizations have indicated certain minimum dietary levels for essential fatty acids. For example, for humans, the World Health Organization suggests that 3% of calories should consist of essential fatty acids for an adult and 5% for children. The essential fatty acids they specify are linoleic and linolenic acids. Specific recommendations made by United States governmental agencies suggest that linoleic acid should comprise approximately 12% of calories. Some argue this should be increased to as much as 10% for optimal or therapeutic effects.

But this minimum recommendation for linoleic acid is not only met by modem food sources, it is usually exceeded to the extreme. For example, the average American would need only to consume about 45 milligrams of linoleic acid per kilogram of body weight per day, but they are consuming over 300. The same disparity exists for animals on modern processed foods.

High dietary omega six fatty acids are common but essential fatty acid deficiencies are paradoxically also common. This is due to a variety of factors. The increasing use of warm weather seeds, which now predominate in modern agriculture, provides the excess supply. The fat tooth” that modern cultures have is satisfied by large portions of omega-6 oils in processed foods. The discovery of cholesterol in atherosclerotic plaques, leading to the conclusion that cholesterol should be excluded from the diet, also led to increased consumption of vegetable (omega-6) fats.

Although exceeding the minimums quantitatively is apparently easy, the quality of fatty acids is threatened by the very nature of processing itself, which can readily degrade essential fatty acids into nonutilizable or even toxic forms. The primary goal should therefore be to decrease omega-6 fatty acids in quantity and increase their quality while at the same time increasing the omega-3 to omega-6 ratio in the diet.

OMEGA-3 RECOMMENDATIONS

Sources of omega-3 oils include fish, wild meat and animal products from animals on high omega-3 diets, as well as certain seeds such as flaxseed, chia, rape, cold-weather nuts and soybeans. Other sources include mosses, ferns, alfalfa, the bark of certain trees, and phytoplankton which have the metabolic machinery (desaturase and elongase enzymes) within chloroplasts to convert omega-6’s to omega-3’s. But normally these sources are not consumed to any degree by non-wild higher mammals. Wild animals have not only less fat, but a higher omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid ratio in tissues.1 (Fig. 30)

The recommendation for linolenic acid (plant source omega-3) to prevent deficiency is .54% of calories.2 Others suggest a level ranging from 0.8% to 1.2%.3 More important than absolute amounts of linolenic acid would be the ratio corresponding to linoleic acid and perhaps other fatty acids. Clinical effectiveness, as can be predicted from a synergonic view, has been related to balance rather than dose.4,5 The ideal ratio can be deduced from the respective levels of these oils in many common natural foods and also the ratio which exists in mother’s milk. This ratio seems to be approximately 5: 1, with linoleic acid comprising the greater proportion. (Fig. 33)

Unfortunately some American mothers have ratios exceeding 30: 1.6,7 A minimum of 11/2 grams per day of linolenic acid for humans has been suggested for maintenance and over 100 grams per day have been utilized in therapy.8

Omega-3 fish oils consumed specifically to treat or prevent cardiovascular disease should make up 2% of daily calorie consumption according to some researchers. This would amount to approximately five grams per day. As much as 10-20 grams or even more per day has also been suggested.9 Some, however, report that relatively small doses can create a beneficial effect.10 Others report an unfavorable shift in LDL-C and LDL-apoprotein B concentrations in low doses compared to the higher ones.11 Such confusion and contradiction abounds when attempting to design diet based on doses of isolated nutrients… benefits are possible but so are dangers.

OMEGA-3 DANGERS

There are a variety of dangers associated with the consumption of high levels of fish oils. Increased bleeding time may create risks for cerebral vascular accident and epistaxis (nose bleed).12,13 Fish oils have recently been shown to increase LDL levels and thus potentially predispose to cardiovascular disease rather than prevent it.14 Depletion of body reserves of vitamin E used to stabilize these highly reactive oil molecules (potential steatitis, yellow fat disease, may result but is prevented with vitamin E supplementation — the dose required being up to six times normal levels), free radical and peroxide generation from the spontaneous degradation of these oils, and over-consumption of heavy metals (mercury etc.) and chlorinated hydrocarbons or toxins which may concentrate in fish oils.15,16Since fish are higher on the food chain than plant sources of omega-3, the risk of toxin concentration is of course greater. Although linolenic acid is believed to be approximately 1/5 as effective in some therapies as EPA derived directly from fish oil (since it must go through enzymatic steps to convert to EPA), many would argue that this is the preferred source of omega-3 fatty acids since this dietary source could simply permit the body to regulate its own requirement for EPA. 17,18

OMEGA-9 RECOMMENDATIONS

Omega-9 oils derived from olive and other sources are not considered an essential dietary fatty acid. However, an impressive body of evidence indicates their health and nutritional benefits. Doses of as high as 10% of dietary fats, or 1 ounce of olive oil per day is one recommendation based upon research on the effect of omega-9 fatty acids on various health parameters.19-21

PHOSPHOLIPID RECOMMENDATIONS

Phospholipids are a predominant part of all cellular and organelle membranes and thus are an extremely important biochemical component. They are particularly rich in brain tissue, sphingosines, and in sphingomyelin. The choline fraction of phosphotidl choline is a component of the neuronal transmitter acetylcholine. There is no dietary requirement for phospholipids since the body is capable of manufacturing them. However, there is a considerable body of medical literature indicating the beneficial effects of supplementing lecithin, phosphotidl choline, to the diet. A dosage of choline ranging from three to twelve grams per day has been used for such conditions as tardive dyskinesia, pre-senile dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, manic depression, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, and a wide range of other neurological and locomotor as well as autonomic dysfunctions in humans and animals. 22-28

SATURATED FAT RECOMMENDATIONS

There is no recognized dietary requirement for saturated fat. However, it is and always has been a part of dietary makeup. Although saturated fats have received considerable bad press, recent studies have shown stearic acid (18:0) to actually decrease blood cholesterol levels.29,30 (A method of determining the level of saturation of fats is to place oil in the refrigerator. Saturated fats will become hard, a mixture of saturates and unsaturates will become cloudy, whereas a pure unsaturate will remain liquid.)

Saturated fat intake, as with cholesterol intake, may be more of a concern because of its relationship to particular dietary patterns. The modern, highly processed, high fat diets invariably have high saturated fats and high cholesterol levels and are positively associated with various degenerative diseases. Evidence supports the relationship between low saturated fats in the diet and decreased serum cholesterol levels. Additionally, the ratio of saturated fats to unsaturated fats is an important criterion for measuring risks. Maintaining an unsaturated fat to saturated fat ratio of 3 to 1 or greater and keeping total fats to less than 30% of dietary calories are widely accepted as guidelines for decreasing cardiovascular risk.31

GUIDELINES

The above discussion is not meant as a recommendation to carefully measure oils in the diet on a gram scale or to seek a potpourri of capsules. The inference from the data is the value of natural whole, fresh foods. If these are carefully selected, the quantities and ratios have already been taken care of by the best chemist of all, nature.

Certain practical rules of thumb will help alter the essential fatty acid content of the diet to enhance health:

1) Consume increasing amounts of fresh, whole organically grown fruits and vegetables, seeds and nuts;

2) If cooking is done, cook without oils or cook with olive oil, high omega-9 commercial products, lard or butter (since these saturated fats are the most heat stable against oxidation);

3) Minimize cooking temperatures and try to eliminate cooking as much as possible;

4) Incorporate natural raw foods into the diet known to contain high levels of omega-3 and -9 oils;

5) Increase the ratio of omega-3 fatty acids to omega-6’s;

6) If wishing to derive omega-3 fatty acids from fish, poach or broil fish known to contain high levels of omega-3 fatty acids (Fig. 33);

7) If fatty acid oil supplements are used, they should contain balances of the oils as described above and be properly stabilized with antioxidants (natural, if possible), packaged in light impervious safe containers (some plastic components will leach into oils) and nitrogen flushed. Supplemental vitamin E (200-400 I.U. per day) should also be consumed when any isolated fats and oils are added to the diet.

COMMERCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES

From a commercial standpoint, this new knowledge creates excellent opportunities to improve food nutritional value as Dr. Kinsella of Cornell’s Institute of Food Science points out:

The food industry (both producers and processors) should explore methods for adjusting the amounts and ratios of PUFA’s in food products. Successfully increasing the w-3 PUFA content of foods will require innovative approaches for controlling autooxidation and off-flavor development in such foods. The discovery of multiple and potent effects of eicosanoids and the apparent beneficial effects of w-3 PUFA’s has invigorated biochemical lipid research and has presented opportunities for making significant progress in the amelioration of atherosclerosis, perturbed immune functions. Cancer, arthritis, and thrombosis, the major causes of death and debility in the U.S. Knowledge of the links between dietary fatty acids and the incidence and severity of these degenerative diseases will provide further rationale for modifying the lipid prof1les of existing food products and developing new food products to improve nutrition and the quality of life of this and future generations. 32

Whether industry will responsibly act on this information remains to be seen. Since considerable pressure exists within the modern corporate environment to prioritize the bottom line, rather than simply do good, change will not likely occur until consumer demand creates a commerciable opportunity. An informed consumer using the power of the dollar will therefore likely be the ultimate reason our food supply changes for the better.

The Power Of Supermarkets And Changing Attitudes?

Monday, March 31st, 2008

More and more concerns have been raised about the impact of the supermarket giants both on food production as well as on workers rights.

A recent report by War on Want and the British GMB, investigating the case of Wal-Mart (ASDA), shows how the relentless pursuit of supermarkets of the lowest possible prices has a negative impact on the supermarkets local communities as well as their suppliers, often based in the poorest countries of the world.

A few years ago, the supermarket retailer Safeway (now owned by Asda AKA Wal-mart) sent letters to their farmer suppliers asking for a contribution of ?20,000 per product line, in order to improve marketing of the products. They went on to invoice their suppliers for these sums. Supermarkets have tended to only do business with the largest scale suppliers at the lowest cost wherever they may be located. Next time you go to the supermarket take a closer look at the food labels, you will see New Zealand lamb and vegetables from Israel. But this is not what most shoppers would choose - when asked, they say they prefer British farm food. Supermarkets are moving towards this as many are now offering vegetable and meat box schemes stocked only with local and often organic food. Many small firms have spent years building organic box schemes and organic delivery into a viable business only for supermarkets to jump in on the act as it becomes more mainstream.

Britains supermarkets are damaging British business, are bad for consumers and bad for the environment. Farmers and consumers are paying the price of its uncontrolled expansion here and overseas. MPs must act now to curb the growing market power of supermarkets and ensure that Britains booming supermarket industry does not kill off farmers, consumer choice and the traditional British high street.

The UK Competition Commission has been called upon to look at the actions of supermarkets which many say are damaging almost everything that they touch.

Tesco controls nearly one third of the UK grocery market, setting the standard across the retail sector. But while the company boasts about its commitment to fair trade and corporate responsibility, a new report from Friends of the Earth shows that Tescos practices are putting many UK farmers out of business; while on the high street, some 2,000 independent stores went out of businesses in the last year alone, unable to compete with promotions and planning and taxation policies which favour the multiples over smaller shops.

One in five people think that supermarkets are most influential when planning decisions get made, over the council or local people. Often people cannot get obtain planning permission to build an extension yet the supermarkets are often granted permission to build huge stores the size of football stadiums

But, things are changing for the better-

Supermarkets are trialing having tractors deliver goods straight to the supermarket door to save on food miles.

Tesco are installing solar panels and using renewable energy in certain stores to show how green they are becoming.

Waitrose has started its own fair-trade scheme. The cash has been raised as part of the food retailers initiative to return a sizeable proportion of profits it earns on sales of citrus fruits to the farmers who grow them.

Ikea is to become the UKs first major retailer to regularly charge customers for plastic bags, to try and tackle waste and environmental damage.

The success of Marks & Spencers ethical marketing drive that urged shoppers to look behind the label has dwarfed all its previous advertising campaigns, according to research from a leading City brokerage.

Supermarket Sainsburys is to sell more than 500 of its own-brand products in compostable packs instead of plastic as it seeks to cut packaging waste. It says the scheme, already trialled on some of its organic range, will save 3,550 tonnes of plastic a year.

Is this a genuine change in attitudes by the supermarkets or merely a change in public relations direction to ensure they get all the green pounds that tend to be spent in local markets and shops? Ill let you decide.

How to Pay for Your Home Improvement

Monday, March 31st, 2008

You want to add a deck to your home to enjoy your evenings outside with your family and friends. You have cash sitting in your bank or you have a few credit cards that you can tap into to finance your home improvement. What is the best option? Should you get a Home Equity Line of Credit? Making the right decision is based on knowing various pros and cons of different ways to finance your project and your current situation. Even if you have cash sitting in the bank, it may not always be the best option.

If you have cash at hand, it should be earning at least 5% in a savings account. If you are not earning 5% from your bank, dump them and go to a bank that will give you at least 5% on your money. Search the Internet and you will be able to find a few online savings accounts, offered by well known banks like Citibank, Emigrant bank or HSBC that will give you a 5% return on your deposit.

If your credit is good and the project is small, search for a credit card that will give you 0% interest rate for a year. Apply online and get approved instantly. Within a couple of weeks, you will get your card and you will be able to use it for your home improvement project. You can use the same technique for store credit cards, Master Card or Visa. When you get a loan on 0% interest rate, make sure that you don’t miss a payment. To avoid missing a payment, use online payments offered by many banks for free or the online payment option of the credit card company. Using an online payment, setup a scheduled payment plan for the monthly payment to the credit card. If you miss a payment, your credit card company will withdraw your 0% rate and may even impose a high rate on the remaining balance. So it is very important that you don’t miss a single payment. Be aware that when you use a credit card to finance your home improvement project, you cannot claim any tax deductions on the interest you pay. Hence, it is extremely important that you retain your 0% interest rate till you pay off the loan.

If your home improvement project is a large one and you want to do it in stages, HELOC, or Home Equity Line of Credit, is a good option. Search the Internet to get the best rate. Find a bank that not only offers the best rate but also waives the finance charges. When you take a HELOC loan, you are essentially putting your home as collateral and the interest you pay may be tax deducible.

Refinancing your home is a good choice if you have a large equity in your home or you want to reduce your existing mortgage rate. Also, if your home improvement project will add substantial equity to you home, refinancing is an attractive option. You will also get tax benefits on the interest you pay.

Obtaining a second mortgage to finance your home improvement project makes sense if you get a low fixed interest rate and the interest rate on your first mortgage is even lower than the second mortgage. A second mortgage involves less paper works than a full refinancing.

Are you thinking about getting your money from your company’s 401 (K) plan? Forget it. Don’t use your 401 (K) plan money for your home improvement. A 401 (K) plan is for your retirement not for your home improvement projects. If you are not old enough (59.5 years or more) to take a distribution, you will have to pay tax and 10% penalty for any withdrawal from your 401 (K) plan. Borrowing against your 401 (K) savings is also not a wise choice because 1) you have to pay it back with the above average interest rate 2) money borrowed from your 401 (K) plan will not earn anything in your 401 (K) plan till you pay it back completely. On top of that, if you are laid off you will be hit with the tax and a 10% penalty unless you pay the remaining balance in one lump sum.

Don’t make a decision on haste. Weigh the pros and cons of various methods discussed above and your current situation. Find the best way to finance your home improvement project using other people’s money and without hitting your pocket book hard.

Greed and Fear?

Monday, March 31st, 2008

We have heard it: the market is not driven by money but by greed and fear. The two biggest emotions that move markets up and down at random; they seem to fluctuate without any logic behind them.

Why do we get these emotions when we trade? After all, it’s stocks we’re trading, not playing sports where our bodies are physically working to exert energy and sweat. So why then does it take to so much emotion just to click a buy button and a sell button and watch the screen with numbers moving back and forth?

When it comes to money, it’s the master of us all. It doesn’t matter what walk of life we hold, we are taught that money is the only way to reflect us as successful and accomplished people. But in the end, does it come down to money to become successful in trading?

The answer is no. Why? Success comes from loving what you do, not from doing what you’re doing for the sake of money. There are people who work at jobs they don’t like. Many do it just to get by but do not have the drive to excel. People who love their jobs have higher probability to excel in their work because they don’t see it as work but something they love to do. Many of us enter the market to make money, not lured by the challenge of figuring out how the market works. It is the reason why new investors and traders start by placing a large position thinking the trade in monetary value, profit or loss. They think will be quick and easy, not really giving thought on how to figure out this complex but interesting market first before committing money in there. By committing money, its about the money, not the pleasure of learning about the markets.

This is where fear and greed comes in. This very first thought people make when entering is ‘how much can I make?’ and not ‘I wonder how this market works?’ There is a big difference in this mindset. When we don’t worry about the money, we can view things in a more objective way. Believe it or not, there is a fine line from being in a trade and out of a trade, especially holding a big position. The emotions overtake judgment very quickly when a major loss is on the line with the prices fluctuating rapidly.

So how do deal with this? There are several things we can do keep greed and fear out of the trading plan:

1. Start trading smallest positions possible -The idea is to learn, improve and perfect trading while not thinking about the importance of gains or losses. This should subdue if not remove the fear and the greed.

2. Use stop loss order - Believe it or not, stop loss orders bring comfort and peace of mind that would otherwise bring many traders sleepless nights. Why? Not knowing how much the loss is, which can be unlimited, carry a major concern. This method will get rid of the fear factor.

3. Create a trading plan - Having a plan of attack, where to get in and where to get out in a certain market condition relieves the trader from having to think on his feet; without a plan will cause the trader to freeze and be indecisive and in turn cause more emotional stress.

4. Set target price - This may help in deciding before the trade when to take profits, not leaving to decide when to exit. Target profits helps against greedy feelings on thinking that the profits will continue to rise. When it doesn’t and profits turning into losses, the tendency is to freeze and not take action. Having profit targets also help prevent the taking profits too early. This is also a fear stemming from being afraid the profits will disappear and turn into a loss.

This is the worst aspect of the trading: lack of self-control. Trading gives total freedom on deciding when and where to buy and sell but this is also why freedom becomes a hindrance. Discipline is the only method to alleviate fear and greed. Without it, it will set the tone a fear of losing everything and greed will prevent from taking profits when it’s right the time to do so.
