Internalizing The Beat Once For All

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

I’m always amazed at how some musicians can come together, count-off a tune, and create music on the spot that really swings.

How come some can do this yet others simply can’t? Why is it that some music grooves a lot and some grooves less or not at all?

While there may be a number of reasons to this problem, I’ll focus on one of them in this article. “The beat”

What is “the beat”?

You may define it as: “A common denominator, in the form of a pulse, used by a group of musicians in order to be able to play music “together”.

Now, if the individual musicians of a band or ensemble have different pulses, or beats, how can they possibly be on the same page? Even if someone is loudly marking the beat for everyone to hear, that doesn’t mean that people are closely following it. Some may place their music exactly around the beat while others don’t. All the individual notes that are being played don’t line up the way they should which results in “sloppy” music.

More carefully placed notes by the musicians result in a “tighter” sounding band.

Let’s take a moment and use target practice as analogy.

The target is the beat. The arrow is the note. If we all shoot our arrows at the target at once, chances are that the arrows end up all over the place. Experienced professionals, however, have a much higher chance of hitting the bullseye.

Well, the same applies to music. The more musicians hit the beat right on the head, the more the music will sound “together”.

So how do you go about getting better at this? How can you get a better feel for “the beat” and make sure that your feel of the beat doesn’t fluctuate as you are playing music? This, I believe, is the crux of the matter. The more difficult the music gets, the more musicians have to concentrate on mastering their part, so that they pay less attention to the beat.

This happens all the time on the bandstand, and it is really easy to observe. Next time you’re on the bandstand, keep an eye on a musician that’s tapping his foot to the beat. As the music gets more syncopated, the foot may skip a beat, speed up or slow down, it may attempt to play the part that the musician is trying to play, or it may stop altogether!

As this happens, the “common denominator”, the “pulse” or “beat”, the “foundation” that’s supposed to keep the band together is now no longer stable.

Of course, the musician may argue that the part that he played was exactly in sync with his foot, but that is all relative. His playing may have been right relative to his foot but if his foot moved, his playing was not right relative to the pulse of the band.

This can often lead to all kinds of discussions and disputes not all of which end on a happy note!

A common response to the above-mentioned problem is that “we would all sound like robots or machines if we played exactly like the metronome”.

Let me respond to this by looking at one of the masters of “time” or “groove”, the legendary drummer Steve Gadd. He is known as one of the drummers that has mastered “time”. This means that whatever he plays, he is always exactly with the metronome. You could shut off the metronome for a couple of bars and switch it back on and Steve would still be in sync with it. Yet, Mr. Gadd does not sound like a machine, far from it. His playing is some of the most “grooviest” you’ll ever hear. Why is that? Why can he be in sync with the metronome so much and not sound like a machine?

The answer is in where he places his notes. Let’s look at a simple rock patten where his snare drum would fall on beat two and beat four of the bar. Now, he can decide to hit these two beats exactly on the head, or he can decide to “lay them back” a bit. This means that he would hit beat two and beat four just a tad after the metronome hit those same beats. These are tiny differences and only schooled ears can make them out. But these tiny details are what make music groove or not.

The key is that if Steve decides to hit these two beats just a bit behind the beat (meaning a fraction of a second later than the metronome), he needs to be consistent and hit the two and four of consecutive bars at exactly the same spot as before.

Let me use the target practice analogy again to make this a bit clearer. If Steve’s decision to hit beat two and four a fraction of a second later than the metronome, would be equivalent to hitting the target just a bit to the right of the bullseye, everytime you shoot an arrow.

Notice how Steve would not change “the beat” or “the common denominator” at all, he would simply, consistenly place his note just after the beat, where the “novice” would move “the beat” and make playing music “together” impossible.

Does that make sense?

So how can we make sure that we don’t “loose” the beat? Is that something we have to have naturally or can we acquire this skill through practice? Well, I believe that we can all improve our ability to keep the beat better by internalizing the beat. This will help you to place your notes exactly where you want them placed even when the music is difficult and requires a lot of concentration. This does not mean, however, that you’ll swing more, because, remember that the “swing” comes from knowing where to place your individual notes relative to the beat and doing so consistenly.

By “knowing where to place your individual notes” I’m not implying that this is something that every musician is doing consciously. I believe that large amounts of talent are responsible for the fact that some people will just naturally place the notes in a way that makes them swing. This is what puts a Charlie Parker in a different league than the average college saxophone player.

Ok, so how do we do it? How can we solidify our sense of the beat?

The idea is to “internalize” the beat.

Internalizing the beat means to be able to sense the beat regardless of how much attention you have to pay to the music.

I firmly believe that you can only achieve this by using your voice. Tapping your foot is “not” an option as we’ve seen from my example above.

You can always feel the vibrations of your voice, no matter how loud the music gets, not matter how many distractions you’re dealing with.

I thus suggest the following exercise:

Exercise #1:

? Sing quarter notes out loud and play rhythms with your hands.

You can do this along to with a metronome and without. Just start the metronome, sing the same quarter notes, and play the rhythms that you sightread with your hands. Don’t just play rhythms that you know and are comfortable with. I usually grab just about any music I can get my hands on and play the rhythms with my hands while ignoring the melody.

You’ll find this challenging at first, but once you’ve got the hang of it, it will become surprisingly easy.

At first there will be a tendency to stop counting out loud, or lower the volume gradually, some mumble. Focus on counting out loudly and clearly for the whole duration of the exercise. I suggest you count 1-2-3-4, not just any sound. However, if you’re a horn player, you obviously can’t count out loud. In this case I suggest you do the exercise without your instrument.

This exercise will most definitely help you build a more solid “inner clock” provided you practice it religiously.

In order to challenge yourself a bit more once you’ve mastered the first exercise, you add the following exercise:

Exercise #2:

? Start off counting the click out loud just the way you did in exercise #1, then switch to singing the rhythm that you’re reading from a book and play the quarter notes.

Let me just point out that this exercise will merely add independence skills and I don’t believe that it is nearly as important as the first one.

The nice thing about this exercise is that it will become second nature and once you get back to the bandstand you won’t have to consciously think about it. It will truly build a stronger sense of the beat which you’ll benefit from enormously.

Only thing left for you to do is convince your fellow band members to practice the same exercise.

Good Luck!

The Law of Attraction and the Science of Getting Rich

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

What are you thinking about right now? The Law of Attraction states that whatever we think about, we bring about . This law may initially seem like new age fluff but believe it or not, there are scientific merits to this proposition. The top quantum physicists of our time have discovered that our universe and our reality is very much directed by the observer .

When studying quantum particles (the smallest observable unit of matter), these scientists discovered that such particles behave in accordance with the person conducting the experiment. It the scientists predict that quantum particles behave in a certain way, they do. And yet, if the scientists predict that quantum particles behave in another way, they do. It is the observer that dictates the outcome of the experiment!

What does all this mean for us normal people? Well actually, these scientific experiments has far reaching implications for us as our world is made up of these same quantum particles! In this case, we are the observer the director and hence the creator of our reality, our world and our experience.

So, be careful of what you think about! For example, have your thoughts ever begun with the following phrases:

I don’t understand…
I don’t want…
I’m frustrated that…
I hate my…
I can’t figure out …
I’m stressed about…
I’m worried that…
I should be able to… but I can’t…
Why am I having so much trouble?

The Law of Attraction indifferent to the words preceding your thought. Whatever you think about you will attract into your life. When you think I don’t understand why bad things always happen to me? , you are attracting bad things into your life. When you think I want to get out of debt , you are attracting more debt into your life. When you think I’m worried I will get sick , you are attracting sickness into your life! The Law of Attraction brings about what you focus on even if it is not what you want. Get it?

If you understand this principle, here are some examples of how to make the law of attraction work to support you rather than to act against you. Try observing your thoughts and changing your thinking in the following way:

I want to get out of debt to I want to earn amazing riches
I hate my boss to I look forward to owning my own business
I don’t understand why he is so lazy to I love it when he helps out around the house
I’m stressed about this project to I always create amazing results in my projects
I’m worried about getting sick to I experience vibrant health daily

Now that we have a better understanding of the Law of Attraction, it is no surprise why so many people struggle with regards to money. It is been said that the rich get richer while the poor get poorer . This is actually the Law of Attraction in action. Because the wealthy have money, they often think about how to best use their money and hence they attract more money. The poor on the other hand often think about their present lack of money and unfortunately, that also attracts lack into their lives. Currently, 96% of the world’s wealth is being earned by just 1% of the population!

To address this issue, the main teachers behind the movie is launching a program called The Science of Getting Rich and it is based on employing the law of attraction to create wealth. This amazing program is based on the principles and philosophies outlined in a book of the same title written in 1910 by Wallace D Wattles. This is the same book that inspired the movie.

What is the Science of Getting Rich about? Well in the words of Wallace D. Wattles, The ownership of money and property comes as a result of doing things in a certain way. Those who do things in this certain way, whether on purpose or accidentally, get rich. Those who do not do things in this certain way, no matter how hard they work or how able they are, remain poor. It is a natural law that like causes always produce like effects. Therefore, any man or woman who learns to do things in this certain way will infallibly get rich. The Science of Getting Rich Seminar is all about teaching how to do things in this certain way to create wealth.

The Leo Wanta Sage, Pt. 27: Wanta Confident $4.5 Trillion Will Be Released As Corrupt U.S.Authorities Backing Themselves Into A

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

According to Michael C. Cottrell, treasurer of the financial group waiting to distribute $4.5 trillion to the American people, Ambassador Leo Wanta assured him on Thursday the money eventually will be released, as corrupt U.S. authorities withholding it illegally are backing themselves into a tighter and tighter corner.

Wanta and Cottrell, who together formed AmeriTrust Groupe, Inc. to oversee proper distribution of the massive amount of money, were hoping the money would be released by the end of the business day on Sept. 7, the same day the Chinese were also to be paid trillions by the U.S. government for prior investment gains.

However, the deadline passed without the Wanta $4.5 trillion being paid and still being illegally withheld in a Clearing House Interbank Payment System credit account (CHIPS), an account credited to Goldman Sachs and Co. at Citibank.

In what has become known in international financial circles as one of the most important and explosive stories in the history of modern banking, the Wanta settlement has been the subject of a Bush administration cover-up ever since Ambassador Wanta entered into an official written agreement in November 2005 to repatriate money for the betterment of the American economy.

Further, in May Wanta verbally agreed to the distribution of the $4.5 trillion with President Bush along with the assistance of one Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) court judge and two U.S. Supreme Court Justices.

The settlement, also negotiated with the help of two major U.S. law firms, represents only a portion of the $27.5 trillion offshore fund established at the end of the Cold War, which is now under the legal control of Ambassador Wanta, as duly appointed trustor, a position given to him by former President Ronald Reagan.

Well the news is, so far, we have not been paid and the reason they don’t want to make a pay-out is they do not want it to show up on the books, said Cottrell in a Thursday evening telephone conversation. We have heard, though, through one of the people working for the government that they have not said they won’t pay us just that they can’t pay us now.

Concerning an estimated $32 trillion payable to the Chinese on Sept. 7 and the Wanta $4.5 trillion, Cottrell added that Secretary of the Treasury Henry M. Paulson, Jr., went to China for an Asian/Pacific Economic Conference and, on directions of President Bush, cut a deal with Vietnam and Taiwan China to essentially buy more time in an effort to delay release of the Chinese and Wanta money.

Last night they struck a deal to essentially buy more time which allows them to use Fanie Mae and Ginnie Mae as a cover, said Cottrell. They are also using 1933-1934 U.S. dollars held in a repository of Taiwan Central Bank that were given to China from 1933-1945. Now each box of cash in the repository is worth $100 million and that is to be repatriated. In 2000, a bank law was passed allowing for a five percent repatriation fee and we believe they are using part of that as actually money being traded.

Now the Fanie Mae and Ginnie Mae’s are used as a front and they use the cash from the boxes from the repatriation. To cover all of that they have been given loans both to Vietnam and Taiwan and those loans allow them to do trading through Deutsche Bank similar how they are trying to use our Chip worth $4.5 trillion in Citibank to turn over tremendous profits like I explained earlier.

Now they are using this cash and the cover of loans for Taiwan and Vietnam. They still have not paid us, but we learned there are going to be funds paid out tomorrow apparently via CHIP, however, we rather doubt at this point if we are going to be paid.

Cottrell added that in lieu of nonpayment, Ambassador Wanta has already lowered the hammer, notifying the major banks in Europe, save Deutsche Bank, who have all agreed to put stop orders on any transactions with the U.S. government of $100 million or more.

Most of the major banks in Europe other than Deutsche Bank have already agreed to the stop orders based on the failure to pay Ambassador Wanta, said Cottrell, including Credit Swiss and UBS. We have asked the Chinese but I have not heard confirmation that they will go ahead and pull the $32 trillion owed in CHIPS. However, given that President Bush and Paulson cut a deal with Viet Nam and Taiwan whether the Chinese pull the CHIPS is irrelevant because they now have a cash flow through the system that allows them to stash more money away.

What is most aggravating to me is that the President of the United States and the Secretary of the Treasury have made a deal with a communist country to circumvent an American company from paying taxes. That is what makes me angry because these guys go over and strike a deal to circumvent the American people. They essentially would rather cut a deal in Hanoi then allow us to pay the $1.6 trillion in taxes and use the rest of the money for the betterment of the American economy.

Besides alerting European banks about nonpayment, Cottrell said he didn’t want to tip his hand on future plans to secure release of the $4.5 trillion, saying he fears the U.S. government would use this information to circumvent their plans.

Although Wanta and Cottrell have been trying to get paid since June, he still felt optimistic the money will be released.

I was just talking to Leo tonight and he said we will get paid and that there is no question or doubt about that, added Cottrell. But what they are doing is boxing themselves into a tighter and tighter corner because this is truly a fraud against the United States of America. The more they try to circumvent the more violations of federal law keep adding up.

In related matters, one week ago Cottrell learned James R. Wilkinson, deputy national security advisor for communications, signed off on the release of the $4.5 trillion being held in the Clearing House Interbank Payment System credit account (CHIPS), an account credited to Goldman Sachs and Co. at Citibank.

Wilkinson and Paulson are the only two officials with signature approval over the $4.5 trillion Wanta money, but both have failed to comment publicly.

Wilkinson assumed his post in 2003 after serving as Director of Strategic Communications for General Tommy R. Franks. In his present position, he reports directly to the National Security Advisor and the White House with the specific task of crafting long-term messaging for the National Security Council.

However, according to Cottrell, after Wilkinson officially signed-off on the $4.5 trillion, disturbing twists and turns began to take place as the funds never were properly directed into Ambassador Wanta’s account.

We tried calling Paulson a week ago, but his secretary told us, point blank, never expect a call back from him - ever, said Cottrell Wednesday in an extended telephone conversation about the reluctance of the highest officials in the land to release trillions that would benefit the American economy.

Instead, after repeated inquiries, Cottrell learned the Bush administration had deviously devised an illegal plan to defraud Ambassador Wanta and, in turn, the American people by diverting the CHIPS account first to the Deutsche Bank/Berlin and then to two other banks.

Cottrell added this method of signing-off and then transferring credit accounts is used by less than scrupulous individuals as a financial smokescreen, giving the appearance the money is being released when, in fact, it is being illegally diverted for other purposes.

They have been lying to everyone and it is clear they never want to release the $1.6 trillion into the U.S. Treasury. They are simply trying to steal the money and it appears they really want to bring down the economy and the country, said Cottrell, referring to the $1.6 trillion to be paid by Ambassador Wanta in federal taxes generated by the massive $4.5 trillion settlement.

Regarding the trillions of offshore money generated by Wanta at the end of the Cold War, it was always the intention of President Reagan and Ambassador Wanta to use the money for the benefit of the American people. But after Reagan left the political spotlight, Wanta was indiscriminately and illegally jailed by operatives working for the last three presidential administrations, who have instead pilfered trillions for their own agenda and personal gain.

After Wanta’s release from a Wisconsin jail in 2005, he was instructed in a 2003 memorandum opinion by Federal Judge Gerald Bruce Lee of the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia, to try and return the $27.5 trillion to U.S. coffers according to President Reagan’s instructions.

The $4.5 trillion settlement is a culmination of his efforts after finding a dark and ominous financial trail of theft, bribery and deception, discovering in his quest to retrace the whereabouts of the offshore money that much of it had been stolen or diverted for private use by the last three presidential administrations.

Wanta also discovered to his dismay that a CIA disinformation campaign had been waged, spreading false rumors of his death, making it easier for those criminals inside the government to abscond with trillions.

To date he has provided the Arctic Beacon with documentation of more than $745 billion in stolen funds, including accounts leading to Bush. Sr., Neil Bush and former President Clinton.

Wanta added that at the time he entered into the settlement in May he had further identified upwards of $2 trillion in stolen funds from accounts under his control, keeping the documentation as financial leverage in case the $4.5 trillion settlement falls through.

And since President Bush was notified in writing of the settlement in July, observers claim his false American colors have come shining through as he placed an immediate illegal hold on the money in an effort to protect the financial dike from exploding and the criminals in government being exposed instead of doing the right thing and injecting an immediate trillion dollar boost into the American economy.

After learning of the Wanta settlement and the fact the Ambassador was still alive, the Chinese set the Sept 7 due date for the return of their investment money, long since frozen by U.S. authorities in what has become known as the China Foundation Money.

The link between Ambassador Wanta and the $32 trillion owed the Chinese goes back to the days of World War II-Cold War and connections with his Chinese business partner, Howe Kwong Kok, said Cottrell. Out of loyalty and respect, the Chinese have thrown their support behind Ambassador Wanta and have applied added pressure so that U.S authorities release the money.

Selecting a Colocation Facility

Selecting a Colocation Facility

Communications and data access are integral for business operations. Websites, email and messaging services, and servers have to be up and protected for business communications to function. Data centers that house mission-critical infrastructure - the most vital parts of the company network, like servers and databases - must sustain the power, climate-control and connectivity that network infrastructure demands.

Redundancy

The colocation facility should have redundant systems, with sufficient capacity, at every point of operation, from climate control systems to network equipment. Having multiple units for to handle capacity is not the same as redundancy. All systems should be in an n+1 configuration; for example, if there are two units, they should both run at less than 50% capacity so that if one fails, the other can still handle the load; if there are three units, then they should be at 66% capacity.

Superior Connectivity

Several factors determine the quality of a colocation center’s Internet connectivity:

* The number of Internet backbones
* Total available bandwidth
* Latency, packet loss, and jitter
* Uptime

Colocation data centers provide Internet access to tier-1 carriers, tier-2 carriers, or carrier-neutral access. Tier-1 services provide direct access to one of the major Internet backbone networks, like AT&T. Tier-2 providers routes traffic among multiple tier-1 providers, and reliability and speed are influenced by how effectively traffic is routed. Carrier-neutral access allows service from any carrier, but requires that customers configure their own routing and maintain their own connections to Internet backbones. Tier-2 access is preferable because routing is configured by the colocation facility and it’s more reliable because more backbones are available, which increases uptime and network performance.

Load-Responsive Routing

The way that Internet traffic is routed, both the hardware and routing logic, has a significant effect on connectivity. Effective routing covers three areas:

* Redundant routers and switches with full capacity for all customers
* Performance-based routing, which continuously adjusts routes to find the most effective one, rather than the least expensive
* Routing among more than three, and preferably four or five, Internet backbones

A hardware-redundant, dynamically adjusting routing system creates a self-healing network that offsets backbone problems, traffic and load, and hardware failures so that service doesn’t suffer.

Climate Control

The design of the facility itself has an impact on the performance of systems housed in the colocation center. Server rooms should control air flow between rows. The heat generated by servers is blown in one row, and cool air can be drawn in from another row. Designated hot and cold rows circulate the air to keep servers from overheating.

Appropriately-sized and redundant climate-control units create cold air and control humidity. Servers have strict climate requirements, about 72 degrees and 45% humidity. Colos must have both chillers for the facility climate control and computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units for the server rooms. The capacity for cooling units is calculated by dividing the total tonnage by the square footage. For example, if there are two 50-ton chillers and a 4000 square foot facility, the chiller capacity is 0.040 tons/foot. Chillers and CRAC units should each have a capacity of 0.30 tons/foot or higher.

Power

If there is a failure of the primary power source, the generators and UPS are vital to keep the network online. The UPSs run the servers while power switches from regular electricity to generators, and there must be generators onsite for immediate backup power. The power system should have the following features:

* Failover practices for switching to redundant generator and UPS systems
* Multiple, redundant UPS, systems, since UPSs fail routinely
* A generator large enough to handle 1.5 times the normal building load

Making a Decision

Keeping servers offsite can be a good decision logistically, but only if the data center provides a reliable, secure network environment. Look for potential pitfalls, where service may not offer enough reliability or performance:

* Non-redundant power, cooling, or Internet connections
* Insufficient backup power or non-redundant UPSs or generators
* A low number of Internet backbone connections or substandard routing methods
* Insufficient cooling systems
* Poor uptime record

Customising A Playhouse

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

This article will guide you in creating a unique customised playhouse for your garden. It covers paint methods, buying advice and ideas.

A playhouse is a great addition to the family garden providing you have enough room. It’s a fun outdoor activity for the kids and it gets them out of your home for a while! These days playhouses are available in all shapes and sizes but a nice sturdy wooden one offers a few huge advantages over plastic version.

?Looks sturdier and often comes in a larger selection of sizes
?Can easily be painted and customised.

The second point is what this article is really looking at. Children love a personal touch and this is the perfect opportunity for a fairly cheap but big present that will last for years.

Choosing the exact playhouse that you want is something I will leave up to you, especially since there are so many styles out there and you know your own child best. Try to choose something that will fit their style, for example a Wendy house or daisy den for girls and a tower playhouse or castle playhouse for boys. You should also thing about the practicality of room. A big playhouse may be nice but a quaint one may appeal more to your child and look better in your garden, especially if it has a special modification such as ladders up or crenellations. I would also recommend playhouse especially designed for children instead of modifying a more expensive adult summerhouse/log cabin. This is because children’s playhouses often have unique features such as special door/window hinges to protect your children from minor injuries. If your looking for a trusted brand I would recommend Walton’s, I have both a shed and playhouse (available here: www.gardenbuildingsdirect.co.uk/Childrens-Playhouses)from http://www.gardenbuildingsdirect.co.uk/Childrens-Playhouses)from this company and can vouch for there quality and stability. If you have your own recommendations however don’t hesitate to follow them.

You want the playhouse to be strong and stable; it’s wise to erect it on a specially designed base, you can find advice on how to construct these on most DIY websites. You also want it to be safe, no point the ladder next to a window a wrought iron fence, kids will be kids and you need to minimise all possible risks. You should also consider the age of your children, ideally purchase this kind of item for 3-5 year old so they get plenty of years of use out of it before they ‘grow up’.

Now the fun part, there are three main ways to customise your playhouse; paint, furnishings and additional parts.

Paint

This is the easiest, most fun and most noticeable way to customise a playhouse. Children enjoy nicely paint thing better than ‘wood’ coloured surfaces so here is where their input comes in. Do they want an Action Man an action man camouflage print? A pretty pink Barbie den? A space station style outpost? All are easily accomplished ideas once you put a little bit of imagination and effort into it. Let’s tackle the Action Man idea since this is the example I will be illustrating with photos. When your playhouse arrives it will probably be in pieces, this is actually a good thing since it gives you time to decide on things. Contemplate what design you want and paint it before you put it together. This gives you a few advantages.

1.You can get to all sections parts evenly
2.You wont have to reach as badly for high parts
3.You can see how it looks on a small hidden piece before painting the main side
4.It will create a more uniform appearance once put together.

You should paint it with a timber paint (available from any local B&Q or DIY store) and remember that wood soaks moisture up, apply carefully and keep in mind you mainly want to paint the outside, not the inside. To create a ‘cammo’ effect use rough, overlapping triangles lines or diamonds of different shades of brown and green. Interlace them and remember you don’t need to cover it all, the wood colour underneath will look pretty good between your camouflage design. For other designs, i.e Barbie Pink you may want to consider only highlighting parts in pink and going mainly white, a solid pink house would be pretty shocking for anyone’s garden. Parts like ladders, windows, door frame and roof would look great with the remainder either painting a neutral colour (i.e. white) or left wood stained. Remember to add some protection or finish to your playhouse too, a clear protective substance would probably be most useful.

Additional Parts

This can really be the cherry on top. Adding nice accessories to the playhouse is a great way to make it look entertaining. Adding some netting across the banister of a ‘cammo’ theme or across its roof would be a nice addition or a flower box for the Barbie idea. For your space station you could add some silver painted plumbers tubing round the rails to make them look more like spaceship air pipes.

You may also want to consider adding major parts, such as a slide. While this can look great you must be careful with safety, also test this for weight and stability. Easiest way to do this is to find a slide with a similar height to the playhouse floor and put them close together, missing a piece of the balcony out of construction (please make sure this does not effect structural integrity, if in doubt contact the supplier, manufacturer or a qualified carpenter/joiner).

Furnishings

This is a fairly simple task to do; just choose some second hand/old/cheap chairs, tables, and pillow to give the room some comfort appeal. A few laminated posters and maybe even the children’s own drawings/paintings would look great inside and offers you a chance to go even further making this playhouse your own.

Why My Puppy Bites

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Many people try to find solutions to problems without even knowing what causes the problem. Dog owners are no different; they try to stop their puppies from biting without the knowledge of why the puppy is biting. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction” Isaac Newton’s third law of motion. Everything happens for a purpose and a reason and dog biting is no exception. Puppies will bite and if you keep a close eye on your new pet you can learn why they bite.

The most common cause of puppy biting is the result of teething. Puppies will teeth between 4 to 6 months with a maximum age of 10 months. It is a very painful stage for young pups so they bite to sooth their gums around their new teeth. Their jaws are also weak which limits the amount of force needed to bite so they compensate by gnawing. So with a combination of a weak jaw and sharp needle point teeth the developing puppy will inflict numerous play bites as a feedback mechanism to determine the force of their bites which will also strengthen their jaws as they grow.

The more opportunities your puppy has to play bite with other people, dogs, and other animals the greater the chance your dog will bite as an adult. The responsibility of teaching bite inhibition lays with you the owner.

Another very important factor is socialization. A lack of socialization with puppies between the age of 3 weeks to 3 months with people and other dogs can lead to growling and ultimately biting, Apart from teething and socialization, be aware that puppies explore objects in their environment, they not like us they have paws and not hands so they use their mouths to do their exploration.

As a responsible dog owner do not tolerate aggressive behavior from either a puppy or an adult dog. Also never lose sight in the fact that dogs do what they feel is correct no matter what the situation. In order to avoid biting and behavior problems it is best to prevent them from forming.

Freelancing as A Career Option

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Home bound workers can either consider telecommuting or freelancing. While telecommuting may keep you out of your home for some hours a week, online freelancing is a good way to make money if you are forced to stay at home. For example, homemakers, part-time students, retired folk, or others who wish to supplement their income from jobs or businesses can all consider freelancing.

Freelance Skill Sets

You can start earning as a freelancer as long as you have skills that someone is willing to pay for. For example, writers, web designers, photographers, and programmers can earn a substantial income by creating articles, websites, portfolios and software from home. The Internet is a hot and viable source of income for freelancers from around the world. Your target customers can be webmasters, online business owners, blog owners etc. For example, blogs and wikis are hot sources of income for freelance writers nowadays, and there’s no reason why you can’t tap into this market if you possess good writing skills.

Freelance Income

On the flip, your income may fluctuate from one month to another. As with all businesses, freelancing does not guarantee a stable paycheck at the end of the month. So keep a small kitty reserve for dry days or have another source of income for which you can work part-time. Be prepared to accept boring, low-level work initially just to keep the cash flow strong. Once you get a good reputation for providing original, high-quality work at reasonable price, then clients will flock to you.

Freelance Advantages

Probably the best thing about freelancing is that you get to work at your pace, in your own hours, from home, and be your own boss. That means, your shop is open 24×7. And as long as you provide good quality work and meet deadlines, your clients will remain happy with you.

In order to be visible, you also need to be seen and heard in the right places, like forums, blogs, online groups, etc. Spend time everyday to visit such sites because they are invaluable repository of freelance gigs and email addresses of prospects. Alternatively you can sign up with freelance sites like Elance.com, GetAFreelancer.com and Scriptlance.com where you can start bidding on projects and snag a few as early as today!

To conclude, a freelance business is one of the best ways to earn money from home and to work for your own self. If you’ve got a fair amount of time on your hands, maybe you too should consider freelancing as your full-time career alternative or supplementary income source.

(Hint: While you can find plenty of lucrative freelance assignments on Elance, the other sites mentioned above generally tend to feature lesser-paid projects. However, if you’re just starting out as a freelancer, the competition on Elance can prove to be really tough. So you might want to first try GAF and Scriptlance to build up your portfolio, and then go for Elance.)

‘Dem Bones

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Inflamed joints. If your dog isn’t running, jumping and playing with ease, he just might have them. And that means treatment for arthritis could be in your pooch’s future.

But before you go jumping to any conclusions, watch your pet for signs of the disease - like difficulty getting up or walking, limping, avoiding the stairs, swollen or warm joints, etc. Any vet diagnosing the problem will certainly ask you about things like these. And before you start any treatment, a trip to the vet is an absolute must!

Your vet will likely prescribe a specially developed medical treatment for the problem - but, according to PETCO.com ( www.petco.com/Content/Article.aspx?PC=article&Nav=153&PetTypeID=1&TopicID=12&id=2132 http://www.petco.com/Content/Article.aspx?PC=article&Nav=153&PetTypeID=1&TopicID=12&id=2132 ), there are some simple things you can also do to make your dog feel better, naturally. For instance:

? If your dog is overweight, ask your vet to recommend a diet that will help him shed the extra pounds and put less stress on his joints.

? Once the pain is under control and your vet has cleared your dog for exercise, find some exercises for your pooch that maintain strength and flexibility - like swimming, short, gentle walks on level ground, etc.

? Ask your veterinarian about dietary supplements for your pained pooch. There are many tales about the wonders of glucosamine, but your doctor can shed a little medical light on the subject and give you the right dosage information - if it’s right for your dog.

? To ease your dog’s condition when he’s resting, place his padded bed in a warm, dry area. This will give your four-legged friend a comfortable spot to relax that will also keep him from over-exerting himself or putting undue stress on his joints.

Of course, there’s no substitute for knowing your dog, so at the first sign of discomfort - even if he’s already on a treatment program - talk to your vet. It might be time for a change in therapy or something as simple as getting him a new bed.
